Not all traffic is created equal. There are actually two kinds of traffic and knowing which kind you’re receiving is vitally important.
Targeted Traffic is the good kind of traffic. In this case, a person actively seeks out and is looking for the information that you’re presenting. For instance, if someone does a search for “cars” from a search engine such as Google, they will be given millions of results. They then see a link that interests them and they click on it. THAT is targeted traffic. The surfer knew what they wanted, and they sought it out. This visitor is much more likely to actually enjoy and perhaps even purchase from that particular website. Why? Because they where already in that frame of mind BEFORE they ever saw the site.
Untargeted Traffic is the bad kind of traffic… or rather, the useless kind of traffic. Unfortunately, this is what the majority of the traffic generated from free services is made up of. Imagine that someone is using a traffic exchange. People randomly surf members’ pages to earn credits. Those credits in turn will display their site to other members. But you don’t have any control over what kind of sites you view. So the traffic you get from such services is mostly useless. Why? Because they don’t care about your site or what you have to offer. They’re just trying to increase traffic to their site. That’s it! Unless you have the most awesome ad copy ever, they’re just going to ignore you, just as you ignore countless other sites doing the same thing.
So… What do we do about this untargeted traffic problem? It’s actually quite simple, there are several methods by which one can easily transform untargeted traffic into something that is actually useful.
- Set up a banner exchange. Banner ads have low click-through rates, but they are lazer targeted. You could be earning credits for otherwise useless traffic.
- Keep in mind what they are surfing for, traffic. Advertise traffic generating services that are targeted on these sites. If people are using these services, they are looking for traffic already. Convince them that they need to also include a targeted traffic solution and have them sign up as your referral. Since you know they’re looking for traffic, you know that this will still be a targeted hit.
- Make you site dynamic and thought provoking. If they see it, it catches their eye, and they like what you have to say, then you grabbed them despite their being untargeted. Make your ad copy as attractive as possible.
- Be creative, people love to see new things, grab their attention.
- Invite viewers to participate. They will love the opportunity to contribute to the conversation. If you can grab their attention, they just might dive in and become a regular visitor.
There are countless ways to take advantage of free and untargeted traffic. It is important to also realize that all the methods used to make returns on untargeted traffic also work for targeted traffic. There really is no reason to not use these suggestions. No matter what kind of traffic you’re receiving, this will increase web traffic to your sites.
